Fall Cleanup. What is it? Why is it important?
Cool, crisp mornings are here once again, and the sun is setting earlier day after day. October must be here! While it’s the perfect time of year to sit back and enjoy your favorite NFL team compete on Sundays, make sure you don’t forget about your fall clean up! A little hard work now will yield a big reward once spring rolls around in 2022!
What is a Fall Clean Up?
A fall cleanup simply involves preparing you landscape for the winter ahead. You worked hard all spring and summer to keep your yard looking pristine. An important, often overlooked step of yard maintenance is doing a few final touches to keep your landscape healthy. We’re almost at the finish line, but we’re not quite there yet!
Why is a Fall Clean Up Important?
- Once the weather becomes cooler, your landscape will remain in the state you left it in throughout the winter.
- Not removing dead growth and decomposing leaves will risk disease and fungus.
- Future growth. Taking the time for a fall cleanup now will maximize your chances of enjoying a bright, colorful spring.
Key Fall Clean Up Tasks
Cutting Back Perennials
Cutting back dead growth is one of the most important fall clean up tasks. Be sure to take a walk around your yard and examine perennials for dead, damaged, or diseased branches. Eliminating those now will set your perennials up for future growth.
Weeding
Noticing new growth in your garden beds? A little fall weeding now will make your spring a lot more pleasant down the road.
Mowing
It’s not time to stop mowing just yet! As long as your grass keeps growing, keep cutting it! Mid to late November, when the air temperature rarely exceeds 55 degrees, is generally the right time to call it quits.
Removing Leaves
Fall leaves look gorgeous on trees, but it’s time to remove them once they fall to the ground. Failure to do so can result in mold/ fungus growth, or suffocation of grass by preventing evaporation. Plus, dead leaves are not something you want to be seeing each time you look outside all winter!
